Newrest
Newrest is an industrial catering company specializing in the aviation sector and operating in more than 49 countries, with their headquarters in Toulouse in France. They were looking to add a facility to their network in Calgary.
In 2008, Newrest established its Canadian headquarters (30,000 sq. ft.) in the heart of Broccolini's multi-tenant Dorval Phase II project. In 2009, the company put its confidence in Broccolini once again, calling on its expertise in constructing refrigerated industrial buildings (Everest, Atlas, Viau, for example) to create, from an existing building, a plant next to the Calgary International Airport.
Broccolini was responsible for the management of Newrest's new project, its first in Alberta. The 12,600-sq.ft. food plant also includes 1,200 sq.ft. of office space (mezzanine) and a 1,000-sq.ft. warehouse. Primarily consisting of an open area with 10-foot ceilings, the building is remarkable for its 20,000 sq.ft. of refrigerated panels, and a ceiling space that allows for circulation and provides easy access to mechanical equipment.
Apart from the refrigeration and ventilation expertise this type of construction calls for, the Newrest project represented a major challenge due to the number of adaptations it required, namely, the demolition, excavation, drainage and reinstallation of the initial building's concrete slab (7,000 sq. ft.). Each of these stages required careful coordination considering the project's tight schedule. The construction work was carried out over only three and a half months, ending on March 15, 2010.
